Hire QA & Test Automation Engineers
The function employers cut first and regret fastest. We separate the people who write scripts from the people who can own a framework — because the band you need depends entirely on which one you are hiring.
Four different jobs, one job title
“QA Engineer” covers all four of these in Indian job adverts. They have different candidate pools and different bands.
Manual / functional QA
QA bandTest design, exploratory testing, release validation. A genuine discipline and the most available pool. Undervalued by employers who assume automation replaces it.
Automation engineer
QA-plus bandWrites and maintains automated tests inside an existing framework. Competent in the tool, not necessarily the architect of it. Reasonably available.
SDET / framework owner
Developer bandDesigns the framework, integrates it into CI, owns its reliability and its failures. A software engineering job. The scarce profile in this family.
Performance engineer
Specialist bandDesigns load models, interprets results, identifies the actual bottleneck. Thin pool. Frequently confused with someone who can run a load tool.
How we screen
Tool names on a CV tell you almost nothing here. These questions separate ownership from usage in about ten minutes.
The mismatch to avoid
The single most common reason a QA search stalls in India: the brief describes a framework owner and the band is set for a script writer.
People who can design and own an automation framework are software engineers. They have the option of taking a backend role at a developer salary, and many of them do. If the role genuinely needs that ownership, it needs that band — and if the budget cannot move, the honest answer is to scope the role down rather than search longer.
We will tell you which of the two you have written before the search starts.
Questions employers ask
What is the difference between a manual QA and an automation engineer?
Manual QA is a testing discipline: designing cases, exploratory testing, judging whether behaviour is correct. Test automation is a software engineering discipline that happens to produce tests — the person writes and maintains code, designs a framework, and owns it in CI. The two skill sets overlap far less than job titles suggest, and a strong manual tester does not automatically become a strong automation engineer with a course. Briefing for one and hiring the other is the most common failure in this family.
Why is test automation talent hard to find in India?
Because the abundant profile is someone who writes scripts inside a framework another person built, and the scarce profile is someone who can design and own the framework itself. The second group is small, and they are usually competing for backend engineering salaries rather than QA salaries — which is exactly why employers who budget a QA band for a framework-owner role struggle to fill it.
Should we hire an SDET or a QA engineer?
Ask what the person will own. If they will build and maintain the automation framework, integrate it into CI and be accountable for its reliability, that is an SDET or automation engineer and it should be paid closer to a developer band. If they will write and execute cases against an existing framework, that is a QA engineer. The title matters less than the ownership, and the ownership determines the band.
What about performance and load testing?
It is a separate pool again, and a notably thin one. Performance engineers who can design a realistic load model, interpret the results and point at the actual bottleneck are rare in India — many candidates can run a JMeter script but not tell you what the output means. If performance is genuinely critical to your product, this is a specialist search and should be briefed as one rather than added to a general QA requirement.
Is QA worth hiring for at all if developers write tests?
Developers writing unit tests does not remove the need for someone who owns quality across the system — integration, regression, edge cases and the question of whether the thing actually does what the user needed. QA is usually the first function cut under budget pressure and the one whose absence surfaces most expensively, several releases later. That said, if your team is small and shipping well, we will say so rather than sell you a hire.
